Two Spirit Medicine Wheel
Two Spirit Medicing wheel is a re-appropriate medicine wheel (the visual for which was in fact created by a pretendian) through a Two Spirit Métis lens. My goal for this painting was to create something to honour Two Spirit individuals and to combine cross cultureal teachings. The quadrants of the medicine wheel are made up of sashes, while each colour quadrant represents seasonality and balance, the sash’s colour patterns also represent different values and histories of Métis peoples, and the rainbow border is a homage to the original pride flag, where colour again has significance and meaning pertaining to sexuality. My goal with this was to create a piece that reclaimed the medicine wheel through a queer, Métis lens, and to make the medicine wheel mine, as I’ve been quite critical of the visual at times.
The piece was created in my home studio in North Battleford SK using professional grade acrylic paints, a glitter topcoat, various sizes of glass seed beads, and threat on a 16 inch round canvas.
