“Waashikoopayihk” (Michif for “Sparkle”) is an acrylic and glitter painting on a large (approx 29 inch diameter) circular canvas. The painting was made using artist grade acrylic, and mediums meaning it will stay vibrant and colourful for many many years!

The piece features a white bison, an animal that often represents change or acts as a symbol of hope. I was expressing my journey of coming to terms with queer sexuality through a very dreamy lens, with a night rainbow (upside down almost as a distresssed flag), glitter (an homage to queer club culture) and the white bison symbolizing resilliance and the hope of joy and peace in being myself. I also interpret it personally to symbolize that what makes one different is also one’s greatest strength. I am very proud to be a queer woman now, but the journey to get there was difficult and lonely.

The piece is heavily glittered and some of this glitter may fall off throughout time, especially after the transportation process but will always retain enough to make it sparkle. This piece is highly textured with acrylic modelling paste and between the texture and glitter, it shifts and moves throughout the day as the sunlight shifts and hits it at different angles. The scale of it makes it very impressive, as my largest round painting ever. This piece is very special and extra captivating in person, definitely one of my personal favourites of 2025!
